Favela Paintings – Community driven murals in Rio’s most notorious slum

The Dutch artist duo Haas&Hahn are responsible for the Favela Paintings in Vila Cruzeiro – Rio’s most notorious slums. The project was based on the pretence that colour, art and community ownership can transform the inherent culture and vibe within a community.

A quick Google Image search clearly outlines the contrast between the previously monochromatic and currently polychromatic city. I would be sceptical how much a superficial change can make to a city’s culture – however, I am encouraged that Haas&Hans involved the community from a very early stage. Those involved in the project were trained in a variety of areas including health and safety, paint types and painting techniques. It is this level of involvement that will give the community a sense of ownership and will ultimately lead to a greater appreciation and willingness to preserve it.

Great post Regan, we were in the favalas a few years ago and although dilapidated in parts art and color was all around and is clearly in the locals blood. Great to see these inherent qualities being used in such a meaningful way.

“… we were in the favalas a few years ago …”
Are there parts which are generally safe enough to walk around, or did you pay for a tour specialising in tours?

    Just curious. Sounds interesting.
